Coming off a road loss to Saint Francis, Ball State field hockey (0-2, 0-0 MAC) was back home to take on in-state rival Indiana (1-1, 0-0 Big 10). Two quick goals by the Hoosiers left the Cardinals stunned handing them a 2-0 loss.

Indiana’s Bente Buwalda kicked off the scoring with an assist from Elle Hempt midway through the first half. The Hoosiers scored once more a minute later with a shot by Sam Scire. However, the quick goals sparked a defensive surge for the Cardinals that held Indiana scoreless for the rest of the game.

“The hope is to be the aggressor.” head coach Stephanie Bernthal said.  “The hope is to set the tone and come into a game with the confidence that you’re putting that first goal on. We’ve gotta do some work to solve that kind of momentum swing and it’s really just a maturing piece with our team.”

Sophomore Grace Chavez started in net for the Cardinals making five saves on seven Hoosier shots. Corner shots once again haunted the Cardinals allowing the opposition to shoot 10 times from the corner.

On offense, the Cardinals had seven shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. The Cardinals have yet to score in the first two matchups of the season.

“It really was about effort today,” Bernthal said “Which as a coach is a nonnegotiable. We expect it to be there. We knew coming into this game we would need that full team effort and that’s the expectation moving forward.”

The Cardinals will be back on the road next when they travel to Iowa City, IA to face Dartmouth and Iowa.
