Ball State women’s golf kicked off its four-match stretch to end the spring season by finishing seventh in the Colonel Classic this weekend.
On Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31, the Cardinals teed off at the Colonel Classic in Richmond, Kentucky. After the first day of play on Friday, Ball State sat in eighth place out of 14 total teams. Ball State scored a 307 the first day but was able to improve on Saturday by shaving four strokes off its round to score a 303.
Although originally scheduled to play 36 on Friday, the tournament was shortened to 18 holes because of immense amounts of rain.
“It was pouring rain ... and the course was really wet,” said coach Katherine Mowat. “In a short tournament format every shot matters. I was pleased with our effort and attitude.”
Leading the pack of schools was host Eastern Kentucky and Xavier who tied for first at 19 over par. This is compared to Ball State’s +34 performance.
The Cardinals were led once again by sophomore Manon Tounalom who placed tied for ninth overall at six over par.
“Manon is just a steady player, and she has been for her whole career,” said Mowat. “She had a tough start [Friday] and had a very good finish [Saturday]. She played well and is a great competitor.”
Tounalom was followed by Junior Sydney Anderson (+8) who tied for 20th. Also contributing were freshmen Emily Knouff and Liz Kim who both finished 11 over par. Senior Morgan Nadaline (+16) and freshman Holly Anderson (+18) also contributed to Ball State’s seventh-place finish.
The Cardinals will be back in action in Ohio for the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational Saturday April 7 and Sunday April 8.
