Ball State men’s golf has their second tournament of the season this weekend, as they travel to Richmond, Kentucky to compete in the Eastern Kentucky University Intercollegiate.

The Cardinals will hit the links again, after recording a 10th and 16th place finish at the Wolf Run Invitational last weekend.

Head Coach Mike Fleck was not pleased with his team’s first tournament effort, as he expected more from a team that finished second in the Mid-American Conference Championships just a season ago.

“My expectations going into the event and for this team this year are very high,” Fleck said. “We were knowledgeable about the golf course and we have a very experienced team, but it just didn’t work out for us.”

Fleck also said that he needs his top four golfers to consistently have good rounds. Fleck is relying on his golfer’s experience to get Ball State into the postseason through an at-large slot, if unable to dethrone heavy favorite No. 23 Kent State, as MAC champions.

As Ball State turns their attention from Wolf Run to Kentucky, high expectations remain. Although it will be the first time the Cardinals will have played at the University Club in Arlington, Coach Fleck says that practice rounds this week and a scouting report of the course will have them ready.

“I expect our team to go down there and win,” said Fleck. “It’s going to be a mix of a lot of mid-major golf programs, and if we play well, it’s a field that we should be successful against.”

Ball State will open play at the EKU Intercollegiate on Saturday and finish on Sunday. Tee times are to be announced.
