The Cardinals need good placement.

That is the main thing sophomore Stephanie McElhaney believes her cross country team needs to improve as they head to Bradley University on Oct. 14 for the Bradley Pink Classic. Even though seven of Ball State’s nine runners posted personal records at their last meet on Sept. 30, McElhaney knows that the success of the entire team far outweighs any individual success.

“We’re always going to get better, but it’s the placings that we really have to focus on,” McElhaney said. “The placings are the most important. I think that that will come naturally since we’re all getting better.”

Ball State placed 17th out of 28 teams in its last race at the University of Notre Dame. While that is an accomplishment for this young team, distance coach Raynee DeGrio said she feels the same as McElhaney.

“Personal records are always fun,” DeGrio said, “but it always means a lot more if you can compete at a high level and do well as a team and place high. It’s more about the competitive effort and going out and beating people.”

The meet on Oct. 14 poses a 6,000 meter race instead of a typical 5,000 meter race.

McElhaney said running a 6K does not change her or her teammates’ goals of putting up a good showing — that includes having a strong placement when the day is over.

“We have our eyes set on a few teams that we’ve constantly been trying to be better than throughout the season,” McElhaney said. “We’re focusing on those teams and working on chasing down those girls and placing better than we have in the past.”

The race will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 in Peoria, Illinois.
