Two Cardinal baseball players were honored for their prefromance in the classroom last week.

Juniors Alex Call and Caleb Stayton were both named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American team.

They are two of 11 players nationally to be named to the team and are also the only representatives from the Mid-American Conference.

Call and Stayton are the first Cardinals to win first team Academic All-America honors since Matt Deckman in 2002. The only two other Ball State student-athletes to be named first team Academic All-America are Dan Lehman (1993) and Scott Rafferty (1980).

Both Call and Stayton were also named first team All-MAC for their performance on the field.

Call led the conference with 87 hits, 67 runs, 24 doubles, six triples, 162 total bases and a .667 slugging percentage.

Stayton led the MAC with a .377 batting average, 42 walks, a .482 on-base percentage and 71 RBIs.

Call was also named to the Louisville Slugger All-America first team, and Stayton is a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Award for college baseball’s breakout player of the year.

Call is scheduled to graduate this summer after three years. He carries a 3.838 GPA in entrepreneurial management.

Stayton is majoring in telecommunications and has a 3.907 GPA.

To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must have a key role on the field and maintain a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
